Multimedia Club members participated in the South Florida Yearbook Workshop at Coral Springs Charter School on Aug. 26.

Hosted by Veronika Levine, Inlet Grove’s representative from Walsworth Publishing, the workshop provided information on all the different techniques to create a yearbook.

At 7 a.m. club adviser Mr. Hanif started picking up the six Canes who attended. The moment they arrived they were served breakfast bagels with cream cheese and coffee, orange juice and juice boxes.

The Canes’ Jessica Bureau won the icebreaker challenge  — along with a $40 prize. Former editor-in-chief Erna Delice won last year.

The icebreaker gave Canes an opportunity to meet the workshop instructors and advisers. They were award-winning members of the journalism world, who had the experience and expertise to serve as coaches.

The first session the Canes attended was called “Theme,” taught by Sarah Levine, an instructor at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and also District 7 representative for the Florida Scholastic Press Association.

This detailed class was about the importance of choosing the right theme for a yearbook. Ms. Lerner provided many examples and references that the Canes might use this year.

The Canes’ next session, “Set the Style, Set the Mood,” focused on inspiration and the overall look of a yearbook.

Students made their own inspiration board, using old articles, glue, scissors, and construction paper.

Penne pasta and Caesar salad were served for lunch with juice boxes and some orange juice left from breakfast.

The Multimedia Club’s last session, Yearbook 360, explored different online software, programs, and techniques for creating a Walsworth yearbook.

” I feel as though the workshop taught us a lot for us to be able to help the new students learn.”  said Lovely Marcelus. “We have knowledge but we’re learning beside them and  now we have all this new information table and the workshop all around was very helpful”

“The yearbook workshop was an interesting learning experience and we got lots of good feedback on our yearbook so that we can improve this year’s book.” said Kethleen Pacius

The Yearbook 360 session instructor, known as “Coach B” of Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, also judged the Canes’ 2023 “What Now?”  yearbook and provided important constructive criticism.

“The yearbook workshop was an interesting learning experience and we got lots of good feedback on our yearbook so that we can improve this year’s book,” said Canes’ Photo Editor Elijah Goring.
