Inlet Grove has won many honors such as academic and sports awards, Drumline trophies, and being an A-rated school.
But there’s nothing being heard about celebrating the students who make the Honor Roll.
“We should,” said Ms. Banks, 9th-grade advisor. “(Mathematics instructor Mr. Doby is over the National Honor Society, so he’s the one that’s supposed to be doing the Honor Roll celebrations. (Former Spanish teacher) Ms. Companioni was really in charge of it, but now she’s gone.”
“Should we have one? Yes, yes we should,” she said. “How do we fix that? We could probably talk to Principal Lopez, and try to get the National Honors Society to do something. And those who are on the Honor Roll should be saying ‘Hey we need to have a president, we need to have somebody in charge to make it happen.'”
The staff and administration are willing to start back doing honor rolls but the people who are over the program are not aware that they are meant to hold these celebrations.
“We usually have Honor Roll assemblies, well we used to, but I feel like yes, the student deserves some recognition for meeting their requirements for Honor Roll, said Mr. Doby. “I know it’s hard to organize those things, but the kids need something to make it feel like it’s worth it, and make them feel noticed.”
“Yes, last year the NHS officers wanted to put together the ceremonies and they agreed on it, but for the kids that are on Honor Roll / Principal Honor Roll, they don’t give us that list to do a ceremony.”
“That’s a new responsibility on us because in the past, we weren’t too involved in honor roll / principal honor roll and it’s a lot on us.”
“I feel like we should have it because most students deserve to get rewards and the classes are hard to get an A or B in and I feel like we should be rewarded for keeping our grades up to par,” said Alaja Depina, a Junior in the Journalism Academy.
“I feel as though it is downgrading to students who achieve higher than the passing standard school,” said Shameka Pasquier, a Pre-law Academy Senior.
Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Inlet Grove had Honor Roll recognitions here and there.
“I feel as if we are underappreciated,” said Ariele Gibson, a Junior in the LPN Program. “Taking all honors classes or an AP class is very challenging, and a great achievement to even pass with a C. So for us not to celebrate getting Honor Roll is an injustice.”
Teachers at Inlet Grove make it their priority to make sure students get the right education so they can apply it to their future.
“I don’t agree on there being no honor roll/principal honor roll celebrations,” said Ms. Frank, Drama Club sponsor, data processor, and upcoming student services advisor. “If they want this campus to stay an A-rated school, and have all these requirements, and all these rules, the students should get some kind of celebration.”
“It’s not easy because a lot of the classes are honors classes, AP classes, there’s a lot you guys have to do as students. Plus follow the rules, like no cell phones, and hoodies, staying in uniform, and your hair, it’s just a lot that is required of these guys. I think the least that can happen is at least a ceremony where you get certificates.”
