The future of journalism, is what goes through some journalists’ minds when thinking about journalism. Journalism has undergone significant growth since the first newspaper in America was published on April 24, 1704, by the Boston News-Letter. In this article, we will explore some potential developments in journalism and their potential impact on society.
Technology and media consumption
One major change in the media landscape is the rise of social media apps as a primary source of news. These changes over time, are likely to further reduce audience flows to news sites.
Social media apps have been a way to get news quicker, apps like Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook have become a popular shortcut for news. Leading some to question the relevance of traditional news sources in the future.
“There’s nothing that would make them irrelevant, all they would need to do is adapt.” said Andrew Mongerad, a junior in the LPN program.
Fake news and misinformation
News sometimes can be untrustworthy, and in a world of doubt and distrust journalists should make sure that they are fat-checking their information and verifying their sources. “I believe that journalists should fact check information before publishing because it’s important to prevent the spread of false information, but instead provide reliable information with the sources backing up the evidence” said Shannaya Montrose, a senior in the medical academy.
To prevent the growth of fake news is by adhering to a certain standard of accuracy and transparency, also keeping their viewers engaged. Journalism teacher Mr. Hanif said, “They go for too much entertainment then to inform readers, I think a lot of readers are more concerned about frivolous information and information that are particularly useful.”
He continued on to say, “I frankly am very, very disappointed by most news stations right now, and to build trust they should do more straightforward reporting, less opinionated reporting.”
Future trends
Journalism is becoming more important but less reliable. A reason why it’s becoming less reliable is because of artificial intelligence (AI), Journalism is becoming more and more synthetically produced. “I feel like as AI starts to rise journalism will be more AI driven,” said Jada Sarlias, a senior in the Lpn program.
As journalism evolves, future journalists need a way to capture their audience. They can try out new styles and formats to find what works best for them to have in the future. “I see journalism evolving by their being new methods to share as well as broaden stories.” said Jada Starlias, a senior in the LPN program.
Personal perspectives
Journalists get inspiration every day but what inspires journalists to do what they do. “I love to tell the stories, I love to share the information, I love to find what’s not being reported. It’s a passion of mine because I love reading and writing. I also love editing, and I love to be the one to decide what stories will appear and be shared with readers, polishing other stories to make it sing, and I’ve been very inspired by some very, very serious journalists historically.” Said Journalism teacher Mr. Hanif.
