RAISE QUESTIONS: Many adolescents and adults have heard recently on the news of the official banning of TikTok on Jan 19.
Some speculate that the social media app is being banned because the Chinese government is a threat to national security. This concern revolves around the fact that the user’s data might be accessed by the Chinese government.
However, many supporters view TikTok as a way to build connections, be creative, and increase economic opportunities. But a ban would lead to harming of creators and businesses, and limit connecting with people from other countries.
Many teenagers use the app for their daily use, ” I use it for editing skills, to make me laugh and I don’t want it to get banned.” Said Angel Cruz a sophomore in the Medical Academy.
” I use it for entertainment, there’s a sense of community on there I don’t get on any other app. It getting banned feels like a repeat of Vine, musically and dub smash.” Said Nyla Charity a Junior in the Medical Academy.
While some teens are sad about TikTok being banned, others see it as a good thing. ” I feel like TikTok should get banned because it’s bad for your brain and it takes away time from the real world.” Said Guerson Laguerre a Junior in the Architecture program.
Overall, this ban is going to impact users in a good way but also in a bad way.
