Two years later…

A MEMORIAL ROD: Here demonstrates two rifles intersecting each other symbolizing the freedom of guns here in America.

On February 14, 2018, a former student, Nikolas Cruz, shot and killed 17 people and injured 17 others at Stoneman Douglas Community High School, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in American history.

Gun control has changed a little bit over the past two years, since the Stoneman Douglas massacre. However, nothing has been approved due to gun control. There are a few things that need to be established in order to end the issue with gun control towards schools and there are solutions to this issue.

Nearly 1,200 children have been killed by gun violence since the shooting in Parkland.  In the end, the only significant national change was a ban on bump stocks — which members of both parties had been calling for since the Las Vegas shooting in October 2017”, said NY Times.

After the massacre, there has been a total of 1,200 people killed since. It has been stated that Florida has been the target of gun control advocates, leading to a few restrictions on gun control within that state. The only thing that changed towards gun control in Florida is the age restriction for civilians to own a gun at the age of 21 instead of 18. That doesn’t beat the case of school shootings rising.

” But school shootings haven’t decreased in frequency, and critics of the growing industry in bullet-resistant items say the only beneficiaries of these so-called security measures are the people making money off of them”, said Time .

The government tried to create a security system in the schools in Virginia, which however failed. This year alone has been a total of 330 mass shootings here in America thus far.

”  There have been more than 330 mass shootings—in which at least four people other than the shooter were injured or killed—so far this year in the United States”, said Time.

Protest after protest, the NRA (National Rifle Association) still hasn’t made any action. Military soldier Nate Bethea believes that no citizen should own a rifle.

” I don’t want civilians to own assault rifles, because I think the risks outweigh the rewards. If people really do believe that they need them, maybe it’s because they see a battlefield where others don’t”, said NY Times.

He even said that America would be at its lowest point towards weapons if the government doesn’t do anything with the issue of gun control towards schools. Even though Red- Flag laws have been on the rise, it doesn’t beat the case of school shootings. In Florida, there has been only five Red-Flag laws that are adopted in the state all to itself.

” The number of states with red flag or extreme-risk laws, which allow courts to order the seizure of firearms from those believed to pose an imminent danger to themselves or others, has increased since the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead and 17 others injured. Before Parkland, only five states had red flag laws. By August 2019, 17 states and the District of Columbia had adopted them”, said WLRN.

The NRA making more Red-Flag laws would be a solution with the problem of gun control towards schools. We believe that transferring all firearms into the military would be a good solution.

This is an important topic to talk about. No citizen should own a gun. A few citizens believe that guns should belong in the military and not towards a student’s head. No child should be anxious about going to school, worried about if their school will get terrorized. Nobody should have their life taken away by a single bullet. There have been more school shootings ever since the Stoneman Douglas massacre. If we don’t occupy these guns before it’s too late, then schools will become memorial sites rather than educational centers.
