The Student Government Association (SGA) and the National Honor Society (NHS) hosted the first Honor Roll Assembly of 2026 on Jan. 28.
The event was planned by both student organizations and paid for by SGA.
It recognized Hurricanes for their academic achievements since the beginning of the school year.
The assembly took place in the gymnasium, where students and parents gathered to attend the ceremony. Many parents were present, filling the gym in support of their children’s accomplishments.
The event began with welcome speeches from Breanna Stephen, SGA president; Sydney Ligonde, NHS president; and Lovely Marcelus, NHS vice president.
The speakers congratulated students on their academic efforts throughout the year.
After the opening speeches, Middle School Principal Mrs. Latson gave special recognition to those students. Following her remarks, the certificate presentation began.
Guylina Estella, Prachena Desormes, Mr. Baker, and Ms. Greene called out student names, handed out certificates, and congratulated students as they were recognized.
Students earned recognition for either the Principal’s Honor Roll, awarded to students who received all A’s, or the regular Honor Roll, awarded to students who earned A’s and B’s since the start of the school year.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, music was played, allowing students and parents to stay, celebrate, and enjoy the moment together. Guests were also invited to enjoy cake, juice and chips.
Reflecting on the event, Ms. Cifuentes, one of the teachers who helped make the ceremony possible, said, “I’m incredibly proud of how this event came together and of all the students who worked hard to plan and set it up. Seeing their dedication and the students being recognized made it truly special.”
Marcelus said the return of the Honor Roll ceremony “feels good because it is a way to keep students motivated. It was also nerve racking because I found out I was speaking. But overall I was happy that I got to speak, and with the return of NHS we got to collaborate with SGA so that was fun.”
