TECHNOLOGY: Portrays some of the endless types if social media.

Jason Eugene, Staff Writer

In today’s society, many of us teens imagine ourselves in the spotlight with millions of likes and thousands of followers on the latest social media apps. I too like to imagine that one day I will be known as a big artist or animator, sharing my various projects with the world on YouTube or Instagram.

I find that social media is an important part of my life and as a young artist it allows me to share my art with other people and acts as an outlet to disperse ideas throughout the world.

According to languages.oup.com, social media are “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.” Today’s popular social media apps include Snapchat, Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and more.

A Backlinko.com study found that 3.96 billion people around the world use social media. This includes teens to elders. Sadly, over time social media has gotten a bad reputation from many people who believe that it is very negative to our society. On the contrary, I believe that social media can really have a bright side when it comes to the effects it has on people of all ages, especially students and young adults, when used correctly.

There are many arguments made by people who say that social media is purely negative including worsening grades, fear of missing out, and isolation. I believe that social media may actually have a positive effect and doesn’t have to be a subject frowned upon.

“I find social media positive and beneficial,” said sophomore Medical Academy student Jennifer Penaran, “because we are allowed to socialize with friends.” The technology provides an outlet for us to connect with friends, family and colleagues.

Stacy Courageux, a sophomore medical student, says she uses social media “To see what is happening around the world as well as an information resource and an entertainment source.”

Mia Bell, a freshmen medical student also says, “Social media is beneficial because you can discover new things.”

Overall I’m glad to have social media in everyday life. It allows me to share my experiences with the world, connect with friends and family, and find a good laugh every once in and while. There’s always something to discover when you’re on social media.
