With graduation getting closer, many seniors are starting to think seriously about their plans after high school, and for most, paying for college is a big part of that conversation. From tuition and textbooks to housing and fees, college expenses can add up quickly. That is why now is the perfect time for students to explore scholarships and take advantage of the opportunities available.
To help students get started, the Delta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority will be hosting a special scholarship information event called “Spilling the Tea” on February 7. This event will provide helpful advice, resources, and guidance about finding and applying for scholarships. Students will be able to ask questions, learn tips for stronger applications, and better understand how to make the most of financial aid opportunities. Seniors who are planning for college are strongly encouraged to attend.
In addition to the Zeta Phi Beta event, there are several national scholarship opportunities currently open for the 2026 to 2027 school year.
One of the biggest is the McDonald’s HACER Scholarship Program, which awards up to $100,000 to 30 students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. Students interested in attending an HBCU may want to apply for the HBCU Week x AstraZeneca Scholarship, offering $25,000 to one recipient. Those who enjoy math and problem solving can participate in the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, where teams compete for up to $20,000 in awards. The Coast Guard Exchange Scholarship Program also offers $2,000 awards to multiple students.
There are also several scholarships that are quick and simple to apply for, including the Be Bold Scholarship, Sallie Mae Scholarship, Niche Scholarship, and the A Better Financial Future Scholarship. Many of these require little to no essay writing and have multiple winners, which can improve students’ chances of earning money for school.
Mr. Brown, the 12th grade advisor, has been encouraging seniors to stay organized and apply to as many scholarships as possible. He reminds students that even smaller awards can add up and make a real difference when it comes to paying for college. Starting early and meeting deadlines can open doors that students might not expect.
Mr. Brim is also urging students to apply for the Bright Futures Scholarship, one of the most valuable opportunities available to Florida students. Bright Futures rewards students for their hard work in high school by covering a large portion of college tuition for those who meet certain GPA, test score, and community service requirements. Depending on the award level, it can pay for most or even all tuition at Florida public colleges and universities. Mr. Brim encourages seniors to make sure they complete their community service hours, submit their applications on time, and check that they meet all eligibility requirements so they do not miss out on this important funding.
Whether attending the “Spilling the Tea” scholarship event or applying for local, state, and national opportunities, seniors have many ways to take steps toward their future. With preparation, organization, and effort, scholarships can help make college more affordable and turn post graduation plans into reality.
