The Canes showed their love and school spirit at the second pep rally of the year on Friday, Feb. 13, organized by the Student Government Association (SGA).
The event was held in the gymnasium during 4th period. The theme of the event was Valentines, shown through red, pink, and white balloons, pink and red fringe along the entrances, and string banners saying “be mine.”
“They (SGA) did an excellent job. I really liked the person in the costume of the heart who was going around hyping up the crowd. That was really cool.” said English Teacher, Ms. Kirkman.
Each class got their own banner, playing along with the love theme.
“This is our second pep rally,” said Student Services Coordinator and SGA adviser Mr. Baker, “and the SGA students know what to do and know what the expectations are. So, it’s actually very smooth for us to shoot.”
The first event to kick off the pep rally was the spirit stick competition, where success is measured by which class is the loudest or most hyped.
Teachers and students made their pre-pep rally predictions on which class was going to win the spirit stick competition.
“We’ve (the freshmen class) got the most tenacious, the most rambunctious,” said 9th Grade adviser Mr. McDermott, “and the most outstanding kids in the entire school.”
Montez Hunter, a Senior in the Criminal Justice Academy said “The seniors are always the most lit out of everybody every time. They’ve just been here the longest. They know how to bring the most energy, and we just win.”
The senior class took the victory for the second time this school year, winning the spirit stick competition.
Shortly after, the Lady Canes Dance Team and the Band Team performed a joint performance.
The Inlet Grove Cheerleading Team also performed, making the audience hyped and filled with school spirit.
The Girls and Boys Basketball Team both made huge entrances, running through large pieces of paper, celebrating their accomplishments. The Boys Basketball Team had won the District Championship earlier that week.
Each class participated in fun, interactive games and won for their class.
One game in particular had the whole school excited all week. The pieing faculty in the face game. Students were given a list of faculty to pie in the face and paid $5 to do so.
Coach Donavon, Mr. Morehouse, Mr. Baker, Mr. McDermott, Mr. Miller, Mr. Haughn, Principal Lopez, and Coach Brooks are all the faculty that got pied.
Teachers came out in plastic bags covers and goggles bracing for the pie impact.
Some faculty came out unscathed, barely a mark of whipped cream on them. For others, that wasn’t the case.
Digital Design Instructor Mr. Haughn said “I thought it was great because they (the students) missed me every time. I ended up with the cleanest face of everybody.”
“So, it’s a little worse than I thought it would be, it’s quite greasy to be quite honest.” said 9th Grade adviser Mr. McDermott “They had better aim than I thought they were going to have, I thought most of them were going to miss.”
