Hey, I'm Dakota, and I am junior here at Inlet Grove. A few words to describe me are rabbit lover and Disney-fanatic. I have a Labrador retriever named Maverick and a pet rabbit whose his name is -- you guessed it -- Disney! I have a passion for rabbits, since my old school had a garden with chickens and rabbits; I grew to love those rabbits since my first day of middle school. I am in the Culinary career program. When I grow up I would love to be a baker because baking is something I love to do and I would like others to enjoy what I create!

TIS THE SEASON: Culinary students including Chef Newman from left to right: Britney Campbell, Ruth Ann Kalchik, Tia Daniel, Dakota Sands, and Jahnel Jones not pictured, volunteered on Dec. 7 to serve hot chocolate and an array of cookies to choose from to the community of Riviera Beach. The event was held at the Riviera Beach Marina where people could buy items and food, watch the tree lighting ceremony, and see Santa Claus ride into the marina by a fire truck.

DO THE DEW? Chef Newman loves to drink Diet Pepsi and all her Culinary Arts students are trying to help her stop drinking them because they are actually not that better for you than other regular sodas. So every time she buys one, we play a joke on her and hide her soda in various areas throughout the kitchen. On May 17th she had bought a Diet Mountain Dew. So we hid the soda behind the table in the breakfast line. She searched everywhere for it. She finally found it when the bell rang for 1st period to begin!

ROBOTICS TO KITCHEN: Mr. Gross, the Robotics team sponsor, has traded metal parts for metal pans. Here he was showing Chef Newmans class how to make Paella (a Spanish rice dish). Mr. Gross, from Mobile, Ala., says that Alabama has their own version of the Louisiana classic, made during the Mardi Gras season.

TAKING THE WIN: GroveWatch.com Editor-in-Chief Brianna Luberisse, a sophomore in the Journalism program, took the Martin Luther King Coordinating Committee Photo competition with two wins, first and second place. I did not think that I was going to win, she said. I was kind of shocked that I won a first and second place.

OCEAN VIEW: Before Chef Newmans classes began to fish we all looked out from the boat at the sea, seeing jellyfish, sea turtles and even coconuts floating by. The captain showed us how to hook the bait (which was either squid or sardines) correctly on the fishing pole.

CANT PUT WATER ON EVERYTHING: This is the quote from Riveria Beach Publc Information Officer Dwanne Watson, center, who visited Chef Newmans Culinary Academy class to teach about fire safety and answer questions regarding what his work is like. He explained that not all fires can be put out with water. With him are Culinary Academy students Dakota Sands, left, and Yolnicka Jeune.

USE THAT MISE EN PLACE: It is only the second day of school and Chef Newmans first period class was busy at work prepping snicker doodle cookies for a board meeting. While they were getting the ingredients, Chef took the time to tell us about using mise en place (a French term meaning to organize the ingredients and have them measured out). It is easier to organize and measure out the ingredients first, than putting them together, said Chef .
